Ginger is a plant that originated from China, belonging to the Zingiberaceae family, and closely related to turmeric, cardomon, and galangal.  The rhizome is the stem and the most commonly used part of the plant as a spice.  Often called ginger root, or simply ginger.  Ginger has a long history of use in various forms of traditional and alternative medicine.  Ginger has been used to help digestion, reduce nausea and help fight the flu or a common cold.  Ginger can be used fresh, dried, powdered, or as an oil or in a juice.  “Gingerol is the main bioactive compound in ginger, responsible for much of its medicinal properties.  It has powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.”  Ginger also is highly effective against nausea.  Ginger has a long history of use for seasickness remedies, and there is evidence that ginger may be as effective as prescription medicine.  Ginger may also relieve nausea and vomiting after surgery, and in cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy.  Ginger may be most effective when it comes to pregnancy-related nausea, such as morning sickness according to studies.  Ginger has shown to be effective against exercise-induced muscle pain according the studies. Although, ginger doesn’t have an immediate impact, it is effective at reducing day-today progression of muscle pain and soreness.  Gingers’ anti-inflammatory effects can help with osteroartheritis, which is a common health problem for many.  This problem involves degeneration of the joint in the body, leading to symptoms like joint pain and stiffness.  Ginger also drastically lower blood sugars and improve heart disease risk factors.  Ginger can also help treat chronic indigestion, shown to speed up emptying of the stomach in people with this condition.  Also, ginger powder may significantly reduce menstrual pain and cycles.  Ginger can manage to reduce pain as effectively as the drugs ibuprofen and mefenamic acid.  Ginger is very effective against menstrual pain when taken at the beginning of the menstrual period. Ginger may also lower cholesterol levels, which is linked to an increase risk of heart disease. There is evidence, in both animals and humans, which show ginger leading a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol and blood triglyceride levels.  Ginger also contains a substance that may help PREVENT CANCER!  Cancer should never exist in one’s body if one know how to nourish and eat clean plant based fruits and vegetables.  Ginger extract has been studies as an alternative treatment for several forms of cancer.  The anti-cancer properties are attributed to 6-gingerol, a substance that is found in large amounts in raw ginger.  In studies, ginger has also shown to be beneficial in protecting against Alzheimer’s disease by protecting against age-related damage to the brain.  Ginger can also help fight infections because of the bioactive substance in fresh ginger, which can help lower the risk of infection.  In fact, ginger extract can inhibit the growth of many types of bacteria. Wow anything else ginger can’t do?  Ginger is a “superfood” that is actually worth the term “superfood” for all its amazing benefits and qualities ginger offers.  13Love & 13Health
